Santa Monica indie-rock outfit Opus Orange – the recording project of classically-trained musician and esteemed film/television composer Paul Bessenbacher – released their new album Object Lessons, August 27th, 2021. The eight-track release was recorded in confinement at Emoto Music, mixed by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Sufjan Stevens, Modest Mouse) and mastered by Doug Van Sloun (Bright Eyes, First Aid Kit, Damien Jurado).

A vibrant collective that deftly traverses sonic and geographical landscapes, Bessenbacher’s Opus Orange embodies the true spirit of 90’s indie-rock across Object Lessons with natural rhythms, noisy electric guitars, buzzy synths, acoustic guitars, group vocals, and infectious melodies. The result is an album that is equal parts ecstatic, melancholic, and anthemic; further bolstered by the musicianship of James Neil (Deathray) on drums, Katie Hampton (Sergio Mendez) on additional vocals, Alex Strahle (Olivia Holt, Loud Forest, Miles Hardt) on additional electric guitar, and Carlen Walth on bass.

Bessenbacher – the son of an immigrant from the Philippines and a marine from Kansas City – has been making music since the age of 8. He grew up in Sacramento where he discovered the depth of the classical repertoire, the spontaneity of jazz, and the sheer joy of garage rock. Now living in Santa Monica, his work as a composer and with Opus Orange has appeared in ﬁlms by Catherine Hardwicke, Brin Hill, and Ric Serena, TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Broad City, and Younger, and in advertisements with Google, Apple, and Samsung.

Xuan

Xuan is a new media artist, filmmaker, and pianist working at the intersection of music, visual art, and technology. Her work includes experimental animation, abstract scenography, music videos, interactive installations and projection mapping, and has been exhibited at Art on theMART, the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, ibug Urban Arts Festival, Design Biennale Zürich, RESCUE EU in Italy, and Sound Forms 2021, Hong Kong.
